News and Happenings in 2005

In 2005 we added some new nodes, SEA, SEA50,  NCA50, ECA59, ECA50, SGT59, JBR and SGT50 just to name a few. Arkansas Hams themselves added more TelPac node's too. There was a 9600 baud node added to the NEA stack and a 9600 baud link is now in place between the W5AUU PMBO and the underground bunker at ADEM. The IND site had its antenna re-mounted. A bug problem at the ASH site, Lady Bugs that is, clogged the air conditioner for the site, tripping the power supplies. We made alot of progress this year. Thanks to everyone who makes the progress possible.

Oct 1, 2005 - New Telpac node KC5LVW-10 located in Clarksville. Nearest node is NEBO. Thanks Jon for getting Winlink going in your area.

July 21, 2005 - There is a new Telpac node online, WD5HXB-2. It can be reached from the nodes SAR, SPA and CAMDEN. Thanks DD for putting it online.

June 30, 2005 -A week or so earlier, Mark K0XXX reported that the air conditioner at the ASH node site had quit working and the building was like a sauna and that the node power supply seemed to have quit working too. Paul KA6VAN and Kevin AC5DK traveled to Ash Flat to check it out. Turns out an infestation of ladybugs had totally clogged up the AC causing it to shut itself off. Hundreds fell out when the cover was removed. Cleaning the unit out returned it to normal working service. The Astron 35 had no voltage output and was replaced with a backup unit. It is unknown if lightning or heat caused the failure. Also, a backup battery/switchover circuit and power bus was added. A mixup with the proper buts and bolts resulted in the battery being left unconnected. Mark has offered to return later and hook the battery up and make sure it was charging properly.

June 4, 2005 - The 9.6k baud frequency at the W5AUU Winlink server was changed to 144.950 to fall into the band plan. The 9.6k baud site NEA96 will be changed to 144.950 when KB5WBH can make a trip back to that site. KB5FJX Carl has been using NEA96 and reports that it is working very well and fast!

May 13, 2005 - New node N5MOT-4:JBR installed. This is a BPQ node with ports on 147.495 and 446.025. It will also have 6m in the future. It is installed on top of the Craighead County Annex building in the air exchanger. The feedline is about 15ft long to a dual band antenna about 80ft up.

May 1, 2005 - The IND tri-band antenna was re-installed with the re-worked bracket. The coverage is like it was before the new free standing tower was installed at that site. Thanks to David K5UZ for re-working the antenna bracket.

April 29, 2005 - As you can see changes on the map, there has been alot of work going in South Arkansas in the last few weeks. The Camdem site had been a KA-Node when it first went online and is now a X1J4 node stack, NCA50, ECA50 and the SGT59/SGT50 sites are now online. We still have some antenna work to be completed on a few sites and when those are finished the links will be tested and the map updated. We have a great bunch of volunteers that work on the network, testing links, installing nodes..ect. It takes alot of time and we all appreciate everyone's efforts. Together we are making Arkansas a great network.

March 13, 2005 - A 9600 baud port was added to the NEA site. The Alias is NEA96 and it is on 144.960 until I can make a trip back and change it to 144.950. If anyone has a KPC-9612, other 9.6k tnc or sound card packet that will do 9600 baud they are welcome to connect and test it out.

March 11, 2005 - A 9600 baud port was added to the W5AUU Winlink PMBO last November. A pc on ADEM's lan running PacLink AGW was installed to provide seamless email from the underground bunker to the Winlink system when their regular email is down. This is over the 9600 baud link on 144.950mhz. If anyone local to W5AUU wants to use PacLink AGW to send and receive email they are welcome to do so on the 9600 baud link. If you do set this up, send a report on how its working to the email link at the very bottom of this page.

Feb 18, 2005 - Telpac node KB5WBH added an SSID, its now KB5WBH-2. The IND site is still off the air till a new antenna bracket can be installed. A new TelPac node will be online today WY5AR-2 in Wynne, Ar.

January 25, 2005 - Kevin AC5DK and J.M. N5XFW made a trip to the IND site to see why its not working properly. The antenna brackets that were made for the old tower didn't fit the new free standing tower that was installed at the site. So the antennas are going to need some work when the weather warms up.

January 15, 2005 - The APN site SEA was installed. Thanks to the guys for taking the time to get things going at this site. The coverage is still being checked out but will improve a lot when Pine Bluff or Camden come online. Check out the SEA site by clicking on the SEA section of the APN map.
